What is a DoS Attack?

Short for denial-of-service attack, a DoS attack is a type of attack on a network that is designed to bring the network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic. Many DoS attacks, such as the Ping of Death and Teardrop attacks, exploit limitations in the TCP/IP protocols. For all known DoS attacks, there are software fixes that system administrators can install to limit the damage caused by the attacks. But, like viruses, new DoS attacks are constantly being dreamed up by hackers.

The following letter from GameDay Sportsbook addresses the current situation:

Dear BetGameDay Player,

Unfortunately our web site is currently under attack - we believe from a group of extortionists who have also attacked several other web sites recently. Our technical staff along with our ISP are doing everything in their power around the clock to resolve the problem, although we cannot yet inform you when the BetGameDay website will be running at full speed again.

We really appreciate your understanding during this time. We have not directly received an extortion demand, however we would not pay one if we did - I firmly believe that this sort of crime must never pay. We are also working closely with the UK High Tech Crimes Unit, who already have a significant file on this incident, and are optimistic that the criminals will be unearthed sooner rather than later.

Please accept our full regret for the inconvenience caused to you during this time - be assured our staff of over 130 people is dedicated to minimizing the impact of the threat, and we continue to accept telephone wagering as normal at 1-800-Fun-Bets (386-2387) Naturally our phone lines will be very busy, and we ask for your patience - we do operate a sophisticated queuing system, and your call will be answered in the order received, so please do not hang up and redial - or you will lose your place in the queue.

Once again, everyone at BetGameDay truly appreciates your understanding. We will beat this, and we will continue to offer you the highest level of service in our industry.

Thanks from everyone here,

Alistair Assheton
