Short for denial-of-service attack, a DoS attack is a type of attack on a network that is designed to bring the network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic. Many DoS attacks, such as the Ping of Death and Teardrop attacks, exploit limitations in the TCP/IP protocols. For all known DoS attacks, there are software fixes that system administrators can install to limit the damage caused by the attacks. But, like viruses, new DoS attacks are constantly being dreamed up by hackers.

Sportsbook Extortion - Skybook Letter

The following is a letter from Skybook Sportsbook addressing the recent DoS attacks and extortion demands purportedly from a group of Russian hackers:

On Saturday, September 20, 2003, our www.skybook.com website was affected with a Denial of Service Attack. For security reasons, and while this DoS attack is resolved, we have chosen to temporarily disable our online wagering interfaces, and are asking all players to call their wagers in to our state-of-the-art call center, toll free at 1-800-809-7919.

Personal customer information was not affected in any way by this, and is safely guarded, and protected.

We are working to resolve the problem at hand as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologize for the inconveniences experienced, and appreciate your support and understanding throughout this problem.
