This week, our pro bettor looks at last week’s golf action, his bets and how they performed.

For the first time in the series, our pro bettor starts to articulate his thoughts and plans to turn another profitable NFL season and we get straight into it with an early Super Bowl investment!

Out of Jail at The Travelers Championship

Last week, my biggest golf bet for a while was the diminutive Open Champion Brian Harman for the Travelers Championship. Funnily enough, the biggest bet since the same player for the outright win and top 5 at the Players Championship a couple of months ago when he rewarded me with a 2nd place finish.

A previous six top 10 finishes in the last eight years at TPC River Highlands make the bet obvious with his solid form, illustrated the week prior at the U.S. Open. At prices of +4000 to win and +400 for a top 10 finish at the top sportsbooks, the bets were no-brainers.

Given that sort of profile and strike rate of previous Travelers Championships, it was a very disappointing opening three days, but like in 2023, Harman finished like a train with 62 to make the top 10 selection at +400 a winner.

Never Bet the Chiefs’ Early Doors Was My Moto

The team to beat in the modern era of NFL Futures betting is the Kansas City Chiefs and luckily, I have managed to get them onside in my betting perm on two of their three recent Super Bowl wins.

Clinically though, this year they are overpriced pre-season at prices between +550 and +600, which if memory serves me correctly, is bigger than recent futures markets which had opened previous seasons as short as +450.

Considering they have won three of the last five and made four Super Bowls, it is quite surprising to me that they have drifted in their opening price.

Will the Kansas City Chiefs Create History in This Year’s Super Bowl?

Possibly, the sportsbooks are letting the aging team persuade them or the weight of history of what would be a hat-trick of Super Bowls in succession, a feat never achieved before!

Andy Reid has always been an esteemed head coach but after many years in the job with Kansas, he was flattering to deceive; the emergence of Patrick Mahomes at quarterback was the key for the Chiefs and they have never looked back.

Another key factor for the Chiefs’ chances and their strong continuity at the top of American Football, is the rumors abounding that superstar tight end, Travis Kelce who has two years currently left to run, might get a new five-year contract.

Mahomes Loves His Golf

In the off-season, Mahomes’ love of golf has seen him indulging in some friendly banter on X with new U.S. Open champion Bryson Dechambeau, who featured in last week’s Chronicles of a Pro Bettor.

Kelce Meeting the Future King of England

Kelce himself at the end of his off-season was over in London last week taking selfies with the British Royalty and his girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

A Change of Strategy Needed for The 2025 Super Bowl

Being a pro bettor means constant learning and tinkering while being sensitive to changing dynamics, and this year’s shift in price on the Chiefs suggests the sportsbooks have a little less confidence that their run of domination will continue.

While Mahomes and Reid rule in Kansas, they will continue to be the driving force of the NFL, so you need them onside in your betting perm. Recent seasons have seen their price between +700 and +1000 after slow starts to NFL seasons. The Chiefs’ strong unity and belief means they never panic after a few average performances, and they seem to have found the secret to timing their run perfectly.

Therefore, this season our opening bet will be a change of strategy as we are taking 50% of our planned overall stake on the Chiefs now at the easily available +600 at Everygame. Followed by a plan to top up halfway through the regular NFL season if the Franchise makes its usual slow start to the campaign.
