Betting College Football Week 1 Odds: Three Favorites Under Pressure by Scott Kacsmar August 31, 2026 August 31, 2026 0 comment Share 0FacebookTwitterEmail 488 Table of Contents College Football Week 1 Odds Are a Tax on CertaintyLSU-Clemson: The Market Has Completely FlippedAuburn-Baylor: Seven Points Is the Whole ArgumentNotre Dame-Wisconsin: Big Favorite, Awkward VenueWhich Favorite Is the Market Asking to Do Too Much? Week 1 has a habit of making bettors pay for certainty. The deeper roster, bigger brand and shinier preseason ranking are usually obvious. The harder question is whether the point spread has already charged full retail for knowing it. That is the right way to approach these College Football Week 1 odds. LSU, Auburn and Notre Dame are all favored in marquee openers, but the number matters more than the logo. Before betting any of them, line shopping matters. The current board available through top NCAAF sportsbooks has LSU around -10.5 against Clemson, Auburn -7 against Baylor and Notre Dame between -20 and -20.5 against Wisconsin. Those are three very different prices. College Football Week 1 Odds Are a Tax on Certainty The market is not asking whether LSU, Auburn and Notre Dame are better teams. It is asking whether they are better by enough. Matchup Current Spread Betting Question Clemson at LSU LSU -10.5 Has LSU’s Kiffin-and-portal upgrade already been priced in? Baylor vs. Auburn Auburn -7 Is neutral-site Auburn worth a full touchdown? Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame Notre Dame -20 to -20.5 Can Wisconsin keep this inside three scores? Week 1 magnifies that distinction. New staffs are testing systems in real games, transfers are learning how teammates react under pressure, and one blown protection can turn a comfortable favorite into a fourth-quarter sweat. LSU-Clemson: The Market Has Completely Flipped This is the most fascinating number of the three. LSU went to Clemson last season as a 5.5-point underdog and won 17-10. Now the rematch is in Baton Rouge, Lane Kiffin is making his LSU debut, and the Tigers are laying roughly 10.5. That is a dramatic year-over-year revaluation. There are reasons. LSU enters 2026 No. 11 in the preseason AP ranking after a 7-6 season and added a major transfer haul led by quarterback Sam Leavitt, edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen and tackle Jordan Seaton. The school has also turned Kiffin’s debut into an event, with College GameDay headed to Baton Rouge. Still, laying double digits against Clemson requires trust. Dabo Swinney’s Tigers also went 7-6 last year and lost major NFL talent, but this is not some disposable opener. Clemson can slow the game and make LSU earn possessions. My lean: Clemson +10.5. LSU can be better without being 11 points better. Auburn-Baylor: Seven Points Is the Whole Argument The board has Auburn -7 with a total around 59. Auburn beat Baylor 38-24 last season, and new coach Alex Golesh brought quarterback Byrum Brown with him from USF. Brown produced 42 total touchdowns in 2025, including 1,008 rushing yards. That scheme continuity matters immediately. Baylor has experience of its own. Sawyer Robertson threw for 3,681 yards last season, and the Bears already know what Auburn’s physical profile feels like after last year’s meeting. At -6.5, Auburn becomes more attractive. At -7, the price is less friendly. At -7.5, I would rather have Baylor. Half a point around seven can separate a win, push and the kind of late touchdown that ruins an otherwise pleasant Saturday. My lean: Baylor +7, but the number is the bet. Notre Dame-Wisconsin: Big Favorite, Awkward Venue Notre Dame is the easiest favorite to believe in and the hardest one to lay comfortably. CJ Carr returns after throwing for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2025, when Notre Dame averaged 41.8 points. Carr’s 2025 production gives Marcus Freeman something every bettor should value in an opener: proven quarterback continuity. Wisconsin gets an unusual neutral-site setting at Lambeau Field, where the Badgers upset No. 5 LSU to open the 2016 season. Luke Fickell’s team also added Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph, the 2025 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year, at quarterback. Notre Dame can win comfortably. Covering -20.5 demands margin. Wisconsin’s route to a cover is not complicated: run efficiently, avoid short fields and force the Irish to play four quarters. My lean: Notre Dame -20 is playable; -20.5 is far less appealing. Which Favorite Is the Market Asking to Do Too Much? Notre Dame is the favorite I trust most because Carr supplies proven offensive continuity. Auburn has the most sensitive number because seven matters. LSU has the most aggressive price because bettors are being asked to pay immediately for Kiffin, the portal haul and Death Valley. That makes Clemson +10.5 the most interesting underdog position on these College Football Week 1 odds. LSU can win, look good and still fail to cover. That is the Week 1 lesson: stop asking only who should win and start asking what the market is making you pay for being right.
