College Football Week 3 Odds: 3 Spreads to Question

fsu vs alabama

There is a dangerous moment in every college football betting week when a perfectly reasonable opinion becomes a terrible price.

Texas Tech is better than Houston? Fine. Alabama should beat Florida State in Tuscaloosa? Nobody is going to throw you out of the group chat for saying it. LSU deserves respect against Ole Miss? Sure.

But those aren’t bets. Numbers are bets.

That distinction drives this week’s college football Week 3 odds discussion. Bettors using the offshore sportsbook guide are staring at three favorites whose prices have moved dramatically enough that the original football argument and today’s betting argument are no longer the same thing.

Week 3 Odds Have Already Changed the Conversation

Houston-Texas Tech has produced the loudest adjustment. Texas Tech opened as high as -12.5 on one major comparison board and is now around -7.5. Alabama moved in the opposite direction, climbing from approximately -15.5 to -19.5 against Florida State. LSU began as a small road underdog on some opening boards and has crossed through pick’em to roughly -3 at Ole Miss.

Matchup Current Spread Total Betting Lean Prediction
No. 22 Houston at No. 13 Texas Tech TTU -7.5 53.5 Houston +7.5 Texas Tech 28, Houston 24
Florida State at No. 10 Alabama BAMA -19.5 48.5 FSU +19.5 or better Alabama 31, FSU 17
No. 7 LSU at No. 8 Ole Miss LSU -3 58.5 LSU -3 LSU 31, Ole Miss 27

Three market pressure points matter:

  • Houston has already attracted enough respect to erase roughly five points from Texas Tech’s opening advantage.
  • Alabama bettors are paying four additional points compared with the opener after the Tide’s dominant second half at Kentucky.
  • LSU has crossed through zero on the road, turning a small underdog into a field-goal favorite before Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford.

Houston-Texas Tech: +7.5 Is Different From +12.5

Houston is no longer some hidden underdog nobody has noticed. The market noticed.

Texas Tech is still favored because there are legitimate matchup reasons to trust the Red Raiders at home. They enter Friday riding a nine-game home winning streak and have beaten Houston seven consecutive times. More interestingly, Houston’s early strength has been its running game, while Texas Tech has allowed only 65 rushing yards per game through two weeks.

That strength-on-strength matchup is detailed in Texas Tech’s official Houston preview.

Houston is averaging 308 rushing yards per game, so this isn’t a cute statistical footnote. If the Cougars can stay efficient on early downs, they can shorten the game and make 7.5 feel enormous in the fourth quarter.

Betting lean: Houston +7.5

Prediction: Texas Tech 28, Houston 24

I would not have loved chasing Houston after the number collapsed from double digits. But getting more than a touchdown still creates enough protection for a ranked 2-0 team capable of making this uncomfortable.

Florida State-Alabama: Bettors Are Paying for One Half of Football

Alabama’s market move is almost the mirror image.

The Crimson Tide opened around -15.5 and are now laying roughly 19.5 points. Why? Their 45-17 victory at Kentucky looked fantastic by the end.

The middle of that story matters more.

Alabama trailed 17-13 at halftime before scoring 32 unanswered points after the break. The Tide finished with 343 yards while holding Kentucky to 209, including just 62 second-half yards. Alabama’s second-half surge at Kentucky explains exactly why bettors have become more enthusiastic.

Florida State is harder to trust after losing 27-24 to SMU, especially after surrendering 430 passing yards. But the Seminoles also rushed for 199 yards and forced four turnovers. This isn’t a roster that automatically deserves to be priced like a three-touchdown underdog.

Betting lean: Florida State +19.5 or better

Prediction: Alabama 31, Florida State 17

Alabama can control the game and still fail to cover. That’s precisely the point. A 14-point win looks convincing on television and disappointing on a -19.5 ticket.

LSU-Ole Miss: The Narrative Is Powerful, and the Price Knows It

Now we reach the game everybody will want to discuss.

Lane Kiffin. Oxford. LSU. Ole Miss. Top-10 rankings. SEC stakes.

Subtle stuff.

LSU is 2-0 after beating Louisiana Tech 45-14. Ole Miss is also 2-0 after a 41-9 win over Charlotte, extending its home winning streak to 13 games.

And yet the most important betting information may be what happened before kickoff week really got moving.

LSU was available around +1.5 at the opener on one major odds board. The Tigers are now approximately -3, with a few books already touching -3.5.

That is a substantial move through pick’em and the key number of three.

Kiffin’s return is real football context, not merely television theater. LSU’s 2026 schedule announcement specifically identified this as his return to Oxford after six seasons coaching Ole Miss.

Betting lean: LSU -3

Prediction: LSU 31, Ole Miss 27

But -3 is the stopping point.

If LSU becomes -3.5 across the market, I would rather reconsider than automatically follow the steam. The Tigers can be my preferred team without becoming my preferred wager at every possible number.

The Best Team Is Not Always the Best Bet

This is where casual handicapping goes sideways.

A bettor sees Alabama ranked higher than Florida State and assumes Alabama should cover. A bettor sees Texas Tech’s recent success against Houston and automatically lays the points. A bettor gets swept into the Kiffin narrative and decides LSU has to win by a touchdown.

Sportsbooks would be delighted if it were that simple.

The sharper approach is to ask what changed between the opening number and the number you’re actually being offered.

Houston became cheaper by roughly five points. Alabama became more expensive by four. LSU crossed from underdog to favorite.

Those moves matter.

Final College Football Week 3 Betting Card

My college football Week 3 odds card starts with Houston +7.5. Texas Tech remains my straight-up winner, but more than a touchdown is enough protection against a Houston team whose running game can dictate pace.

Florida State +19.5 is the contrarian play. Alabama should win; demanding a 20-point victory after the market already inflated the Tide’s price is another matter.

LSU -3 is the marquee-game pick, but I would not blindly chase -3.5.

Three favorites may ultimately win these games.

That doesn’t mean all three favorites are worth paying for.
