Betting NFL Week 1 Odds: 3 Favorites Facing Real Danger by Scott Kacsmar September 1, 2026 September 1, 2026 0 comment Share 0FacebookTwitterEmail 508 Table of Contents NFL Week 1 Odds Put Three Key Numbers Under PressureSeahawks -3.5: New England Gets the Valuable HookRams -3.5: Australia Erases the Normal Home-Field MathChiefs -2.5: Mahomes Is Why the Number WorksFive Week 1 Betting Details That MatterThe Best Favorite Is Kansas City At the Right Price The dangerous NFL favorite is rarely the team laying 10 points against a rebuilding roster. Everyone understands that risk. The more seductive bet is the contender laying three points and change, because your brain immediately starts whispering, “They only have to win by four.” That is where these NFL Week 1 odds get interesting. Seattle is -3.5 against New England, the Rams are -3.5 against San Francisco in Australia, and Kansas City is -2.5 against Denver. Bettors comparing offshore sportsbook options are being offered three recognizable favorites at prices that look manageable. The catch? Each favorite carries a different Week 1 problem. Seattle must replace Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III while monitoring Zach Charbonnet’s recovery. Los Angeles loses anything resembling normal home-field advantage in Melbourne. Kansas City may have Patrick Mahomes back, but his return from a torn ACL and LCL still changes the handicap. The angle, then, is simple: don’t ask which favorite is most likely to win. Ask which spread gives that favorite enough room to survive an imperfect opener. NFL Week 1 Odds Put Three Key Numbers Under Pressure The latest early Week 1 market has Seattle and Los Angeles laying more than a field goal, while Kansas City remains underneath three. Matchup Spread Total Prediction Lean Patriots at Seahawks Seahawks -3.5 44.5 Patriots +3.5 49ers vs. Rams Rams -3.5 48.5 49ers +3.5 Broncos at Chiefs Chiefs -2.5 43 Chiefs -2.5 Those half-points are not decoration. Crossing from -2.5 to -3.5 fundamentally changes what a favorite must accomplish. That matters particularly for anyone playing NFL betting contests, where picking the stronger team and finding the stronger spread position are two entirely different jobs. Seahawks -3.5: New England Gets the Valuable Hook Seattle will raise its championship banner before hosting New England on September 9, a Super Bowl LX rematch confirmed on the official Week 1 schedule. The Seahawks deserve to be favored. They beat New England 29-13 in February and return the defensive foundation of a championship roster. But Seattle’s offense enters the rematch with more uncertainty than the Super Bowl result suggests. Walker left for Kansas City after winning Super Bowl MVP, while Charbonnet has spent the offseason recovering from the ACL injury he suffered during Seattle’s playoff run. New England does not need to prove it is better than Seattle. Drake Maye and the Patriots merely need to keep the game within one possession. And once the market hands the underdog +3.5, the math gets uncomfortable for the favorite. A 24-21 Seattle win is completely plausible and completely useless to Seahawks spread bettors. Prediction lean: Patriots +3.5. Seattle is more likely to win. New England owns the better number. Rams -3.5: Australia Erases the Normal Home-Field Math Los Angeles may have the strongest roster argument of these three favorites. Matthew Stafford is coming off an MVP season in which he threw for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns. Sean McVay has another legitimate championship team, and the Rams have recent success against San Francisco. Yet Week 1 is being played roughly 8,000 miles from Los Angeles. The Rams are technically the home team when the NFC West rivals meet at Melbourne Cricket Ground in the NFL’s historic Australia opener. Technically is doing heavy lifting there. San Francisco also enters 2026 healthier than it spent much of 2025. Fred Warner was cleared for training camp, and Nick Bosa has been working his way back from his ACL injury. Add Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and Kyle Shanahan’s familiarity with McVay, and this hardly looks like an opponent you casually lay 3.5 against. Division games are uncomfortable enough. Division games after international travel should come with their own warning label. Prediction lean: 49ers +3.5. I trust the Rams more over 17 games. I do not trust them enough to give San Francisco more than a field goal in Melbourne. Chiefs -2.5: Mahomes Is Why the Number Works Here is where I disagree with the underdog theme. If Patrick Mahomes is medically cleared and starts, Kansas City -2.5 is the favorite I prefer. Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in December and has spent the offseason targeting Week 1. He has practiced throughout camp, but Andy Reid has stopped short of guaranteeing the opener because Mahomes still needs full game-action medical clearance. That uncertainty explains why Kansas City is below three. Denver absolutely deserves respect. The Broncos went 14-3 last season, ended Kansas City’s nine-year run as AFC West champion and return Bo Nix after his ankle injury. This is no longer the division opponent Kansas City can treat as a scheduled victory. But the Chiefs also added Walker to an offense that badly needed more rushing explosiveness. If Mahomes starts without a late setback, asking Kansas City merely to win by a field goal at Arrowhead is very different from Seattle and Los Angeles being asked to clear 3.5. Prediction lean: Chiefs -2.5 provided Mahomes is cleared. If Kansas City reaches -3.5, the bet changes considerably. Five Week 1 Betting Details That Matter These three games provide a useful checklist before betting an opener: Protect key numbers. +3.5 offers significantly more protection than +2.5 when close NFL games frequently land around a field-goal margin. Do not automatically price championship momentum forward. Seattle’s Super Bowl roster has already changed, particularly in the backfield. Treat Melbourne as neutral territory. The Rams’ home designation should not receive normal Los Angeles home-field value. Separate “active” from “fully healthy.” Mahomes being available matters, but his mobility after major knee surgery remains part of the matchup. Update the prediction when the line moves. Patriots +3.5 is attractive in a way Patriots +2.5 would not be; the same logic works in reverse with Kansas City. The Best Favorite Is Kansas City At the Right Price The easiest mistake with NFL Week 1 odds is betting the team instead of betting the number. Seattle can beat New England without covering. The Rams can leave Australia 1-0 after a three-point win and still punish anyone laying -3.5. Those outcomes are not contradictions; they are why point spreads exist. My early prediction leans are Patriots +3.5, 49ers +3.5 and Chiefs -2.5, with Kansas City dependent on Mahomes receiving full clearance. Of the three favorites, the Chiefs offer the most appealing current price because -2.5 keeps bettors below the field goal. Seattle and Los Angeles may ultimately prove to be better teams than their opponents. Week 1 bettors need them to be better by four. That small difference is where an apparently easy favorite becomes a very uncomfortable bet.
