Happy Gilmore 2 Is Really Happening – Everything We Know

Happy Gilmore 2

If everything old is new again, then why not give the fans a sequel to Happy Gilmore? The 1996 sports comedy was one of Adam Sandler’s earliest and most beloved movies, and it reportedly is getting the sequel treatment from Hollywood.

Surprisingly, Sandler has never done a sequel to any of his comedies that were made in the peak of his career in the 1990s and 2000s, including Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Big Daddy and Little Nicky.

However, he knows the fan interest in another Happy Gilmore story has been there for years, and there is apparently a story idea he’s liked enough to go through with a sequel almost 30 years later.

Below is everything we know so far and what we would like to see from Happy Gilmore 2 before heading into the top-rated sportsbooks to bet on it

What Is Happy Gilmore About?

The original Happy Gilmore was about the titular character, played by Sandler, who was an ice hockey player known best for getting into fights and having a powerful slapshot. Yet, his lack of skating skills limited his career, and he gets dumped by his girlfriend after another failed tryout.

To make matters worse, Happy finds out his grandmother owes $270,000 in back taxes that must be paid in 90 days to the IRS or she’ll face foreclosure of her house. He has to put her in a nursing home where patients are secretly mistreated by orderlies, including Ben Stiller in one of his funnier roles.

But after discovering he can hit a golf ball 400 yards with consistency, Happy takes an interest in hustling golfers at a driving range where he meets Chubbs Peterson (played by Carl Weathers), a former golf pro who lost his hand in an alligator attack. Chubbs informs Happy of a tournament where the winner gets an automatic spot in a pro golf tour where the prize money is huge.

Happy pursues golf in order to win the money for his grandmother’s house, and he meets more interesting characters along the way, including a new romantic interest (Julie Bowen), a pro golf rival named Shooter McGavin (Charles McDonald) and a memorable fight scene with Price is Right host Bob Barker, playing himself.

That classic clip is fairly indicative of the level of comedy in this one. We won’t spoil the rest of the film, but you get the idea if you’ve somehow never seen it before.

What Is the Idea for Happy Gilmore 2?

Little of anything is known about the script for Happy Gilmore 2, but the idea has been floated on the internet about it involving a senior golf tournament since Sandler and McDonald, the actors playing Happy and Shooter McGavin, are both over 55 years old in real life now, so a senior tour would certainly work for the film.

In fact, it was McDonald who broke the news recently that Sandler was going forward with Happy Gilmore 2. McDonald had this to say on Audacity’s 92.3 The Fan about it:

“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

One of those fans is apparently Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce. He was spotted in April at Coachella with Taylor Swift wearing a ‘Happy Gilmore’ baseball cap.

Who Will Write and Direct Happy Gilmore 2?

There has not been a writer or director confirmed for Happy Gilmore 2 except for Sandler as the likely screenwriter again. He co-wrote the original with Tim Herlihy, a long-time collaborator who has helped Sandler with scripts for various films, including Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, Grown Ups 2, The Ridiculous 6 and 2020’s Hubie Halloween.

Herlihy and Sandler met as college roommates at New York University where Herlihy studied accounting and Sandler soon took up stand-up comedy with Herlihy writing some of his material. They know each other very well and will likely work together again on a passion project like this.

As for a director, we’ll see if Dennis Dugan is up to the task of returning. He directed the original in 1996, but he is 77 years old now. He has directed Sandler multiple times, including Big Daddy, Grown Ups, Just Go with It and Grown Ups 2.

His last director credit was 2020’s Love, Weddings & Other Disasters.

Who Will Star in Happy Gilmore 2?

Given the way the project was announced, it is all but a given that Adam Sandler and Christopher McDonald will reprise their roles as Happy Gilmore and Shooter McGavin. Let the rivalry continue.

Still, as for the rest of the cast, nothing has been announced as of yet. Sadly, there are several cast members who have passed away and will not be able to reprise their roles:

  • Frances Bay played Happy’s Grandma and the veteran actress passed away in 2011 at the age of 92.
  • Carl Weathers played Chubbs Peterson, Happy’s golf friend, and the legendary actor passed away suddenly in 2024 at the age of 76.
  • Richard Kiel, famous for playing Jaws in the James Bond movies, played Mr. Larson, Happy’s former boss who stood at 7’2”. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 74.
  • Joe Flaherty played Donald, the heckler who was paid by Shooter to rattle Happy at the golf tournaments. He also died recently in 2024 at the age of 82.
  • Bob Barker passed away at the ripe age of 99 in August 2023.

Actress Julie Bowen would likely be able to star in the movie if they want her back as Virginia Venit, the PR director who became Happy’s new girlfriend by the end of the movie. She’s a comedy pro now with her successful run on Modern Family.

Allen Covert is a common actor in Sandler’s movies. He played Otto, the homeless man who became Happy’s golf caddy. Covert reprised the role already in Sandler’s 2011 film Jack and Jill.

Even Ben Stiller has reprised his role as Hal, the mean orderly, in Sandler’s 2020 film Hubie Halloween, so he could make another uncredited appearance too.

When Will Happy Gilmore 2 Be Released?

There is no release date given for Happy Gilmore 2. However, given there’s a script and the cat is out of the bag, you could see a 30-year anniversary release date in 2026.
