Matrix 5 Is Really Happening – Everything We Know & Props You Can Bet

In a surprising announcement, The Matrix 5 is really happening. While it sure felt like The Matrix Resurrections (2021) put an end to the film franchise that started from the minds of The Wachowskis in 1999, we are getting another sequel.

Or will it be a prequel? Could it even be a reboot from scratch? Not many details are known after it was just announced last week, but there are already props you can bet on for The Matrix 5 at a top-rated sportsbook like Bovada (visit our Bovada Review to learn more).

We’ll go over the props and the state of The Matrix franchise as it marches on with a new director.

Your Last Red Pill: The Matrix Resurrections

It was a surprise the last time we got a sequel to The Matrix as Resurrections came out 18 years after the release of Revolutions seemed to put a wrap on the trilogy.

The Matrix Resurrections marked a shift in the creative fabric of the series as it was the first time only Lana Wachowski was a director and writer of the film without sister Lilly who helped create the original film in 1999. The Wachowskis were vehemently against doing another sequel for many years before finally caving in 2019.

Alas, the 4th entry in the franchise came out at a time in December 2021 where many moviegoers were still uneasy about going to the theater during COVID, and with a home premiere on HBO Max on top of things, The Matrix Resurrections bombed at the box office. It grossed $159.2 million while having a budget of $190 million.

It also was not a hit with critics and fans as it only has a 63% fresh score for both the critics and audiences at Rotten Tomatoes.

But it was also the most meta entry in the series with Wachowski essentially poking fun at the studio for even doing a sequel while also waxing philosophical about the comforts and dangers of nostalgia. There was also that memorable shot at Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg.

Still, at the end of the day, it was a love story to resurrect and reunite the characters of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anee Moss), and you could launch a sequel from where it ended.

We just aren’t getting The Matrix 5 with writing and direction from The Wachowskis, putting the franchise in new territory and control.

Who Is Directing Matrix 5?

The main bit of information we have learned about Matrix 5 is that it will be written and directed by Drew Goddard, a newcomer to the franchise. Goddard is 49 years old and got his break as a TV writer for episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias and Lost.

Goddard’s first screenplay was Cloverfield, the 2008 found-footage monster story that was a success all around. His first directed feature was 2011’s Cabin in the Woods, another strong entry in the modern horror genre that he also wrote.

Goddard has often done projects with a horror or sci-fi twist, including his work on the scripts for World War Z and The Martian. But the last film he directed was 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale. It was a stylish, neo-noir thriller that did not do well at the box office, but it was a good film.

Now Goddard is tapped to get another chance with Matrix 5, which will see Lana Wachowski return as an executive producer.

Do We Know Any Plot Details?

It is too early to get any plot details on Matrix 5, including which characters it will be about or when it takes place. Remember, The Matrix Resurrections took place 60 years after Revolutions, but obviously in the Matrix they can be flexible with time.

When Will Matrix 5 Be Released?

No release date has been announced for the project. Given the last film’s timeline, including a delay for COVID-19, it should be out by no later than 2027. In fact, the bets on Bovada say the film must release by the end of 2027 to have action.

The Matrix 5 Oscars Bets

At Bovada, you can find futures bets for how Matrix 5 might perform at the Oscars down the road:

  • To win for Best Picture (+10000)
  • To win for Best Original Screenplay (+2500)
  • To win for Best Visual Effects (+4000)
  • NR (-10000)

It is unclear what “NR” means, but could it be no recognition like how The Matrix Resurrections was not nominated for any Oscars? We’re not into playing -10000 odds, so we’ll skip that one.

With the Oscars, you’re only as good as your competition, so it is hard to say what things would look like in 2026 or 2027. We just know the past movies generally didn’t get much Oscar buzz, and certainly not for top awards like Best Picture or Best Original Screenplay.

However, if there is a value play here, it would be to take the +4000 odds at Bovada for Best Visual Effects, an Oscar the original did win in 1999. With a new creative mind taking over the franchise, maybe the film wows in that area and takes this award.

Pick: To win Oscar for Best Visual Effects (+4000)

Which Actors Return in Matrix 5?

At Bovada, you can bet on whether or not 4 of the most popular actors return as their beloved characters in The Matrix 5:

  • Keanu Reeves (Neo) to appear: Yes (-1200) or No (+600)
  • Carrie-Ann Moss (Trinity) to appear: Yes (-1200) or No (+600)
  • Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) to appear: Yes (+110) or No (-150)
  • Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) to appear: Yes (-105) or No (-135)

Note that archival footage, which was used in the previous film, does not count as these actors appearing. It must be new scenes filmed specifically for The Matrix 5.

What would a Matrix movie be like if it didn’t have Reeves and Moss as Neo and Trinity? Especially after the way the last one ended. Those feel like locks for appearing, and the -1200 odds for both back that up too.

It gets more interesting with Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. Neither appeared in new footage in the previous film, though a scheduling conflict is what caused Weaving to miss it. He was happy to be part of the film otherwise.

As for Fishburne, he was reportedly not asked to reprise his role in the previous film, and he was replaced by Abdul-Mateen II.

We are going to go with Reeves, Moss and Weaving appearing in the new one while Fishburne’s days as Morpheus look to be over.

Pick: Keanu Reeves to Appear – Yes (-1200)

Pick: Carrie-Ann Moss to Appear – Yes (-1200) at Bovada

Pick: Laurence Fishburn to Appear – No (-150) at Bovada

Pick: Hugo Weaving to Appear – Yes (-105) at Bovada

The Matrix 5 Worldwide Gross

The over/under for worldwide gross for The Matrix 5 is $200 million at Bovada. Here is how the previous 4 entries have fared in worldwide gross at the box office:

  • The Matrix (1999) – $467 million
  • The Matrix Reloaded (2003) – $741 million
  • The Matrix Revolutions (2003) – $427 million
  • The Matrix Resurrections (2021) – $157 million

You have to consider the timing of the release (December 2021 during COVID) and the instant availability on streaming (Max) that hurt the last film from making more money.

It is unclear if certain actors are coming back, and that is important since people are more likely to see a movie if Keanu Reeves (John Wick) is in it. That’s just a fact. However, assuming there are familiar faces to come with this new direction for The Matrix, we’re going to say it goes over $200 million in worldwide gross this time.

Pick: Over $200 Million Worldwide Gross (-120)
