Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas

It looks like the Zendaya-starring film Challengers isn’t the only steamy tennis drama in 2024. Tennis stars Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas have had an interesting relationship timeline over the last year.

They broke up in May 2024, then not even 3 weeks later, they were back together. Maybe a film or limited series about their love story will be made down the road. But for now, let’s look back at the timeline of this tennis duo’s relationship, beloved by fans and sports bettors alike.

Who Is Paula Badosa?

Paula Badosa

Paula Badosa is a Spanish 26-year-old tennis player. While she was born in Manhattan, her family moved to Barcelona when she was 7, which was around the time she started playing tennis. She grew up idolizing Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova.

She started in the Junior Circuit in 2012 at the age of 14, reaching a ranking as high as No. 8 in the world. She was the 2015 French Open girls’ singles champion.

As a professional, Badosa reached the quarterfinals at the 2021 French Open, her best finish in a Grand Slam tournament. At the 2022 Australian Open, she reached the 4th round at a major for the 4th time, pushing her to rank as high as No. 2 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in April 2022.

Badosa is currently ranked No. 126 after some setbacks with injuries. In May 2023, she announced that a stress fracture would sideline her from the French Open. It was also around that time when she began a relationship with Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Who Is Stefanos Tsitsipas?

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas is a Greek 25-year-old tennis player who was born to a pair of experienced tennis players. His mother reached a world No. 1 junior ranking and represented the Soviet Union in the Federation Cup. Tsitsipas’ 3 siblings are also tennis players, so the family really takes tennis seriously. His father has been his primary coach all his life.

Like his mother, Tsitsipas became a world No. 1 junior. As a professional, Tsitsipas has ranked as high as No. 3 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in 2021, which tied him with Maria Sakkari as the highest-ranked Greek player in history. He won the 2019 ATP Finals, the youngest winner of the year-end championships in 18 years. He was named the Greek Male Athlete of the Year for 2019.

Tsitsipas has won 11 ATP singles titles and has twice been the runner-up at Grand Slam tournaments, losing to Novak Djokovic at the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open. He has ranked as high as No. 64 in doubles.

How Did Badosa and Tsitsipas Meet?

As tennis players of a similar age and level of success, it would not be surprising for Badosa and Tsitsipas to take notice of each other and run in similar circles.

At a Q&A with moderators and fans at the 2023 US Open in New York City, Tsitsipas told the story of how the couple started dating:

They began talking in Rome during the Italian Open on May 12, 2023. Tsitsipas shot his shot. “I made a bet with myself. I said ‘I’ll send Badosa a message if she wins her second round match in Rome’ and she was playing very well, so I thought ‘Hey I have a good chance of achieving that today,'” Tsitsipas said.

He went on, “She did end up winning the match, so I kept my promise and I messaged her, ‘Congratulations,’ and I guess you can say, that’s how it started.”

Tsitsidosa Is Created (June 2023)

Badosa and Tsitsipas have been very transparent on social media about their relationship, which has been dubbed “Tsitsidosa” for their names. But Tsitsidosa is also the name used for a joint Instagram account between the couple that they put out in June 2023 to confirm their relationship.

Before the Instagram account, they teased their relationship on Spotify of all places where they changed their profile pictures to selfies with each other.

They also teased about this on X/Twitter, so this was a full-blown social media tour to announce this relationship.

If that’s not enough social media, they also appeared on a TikTok challenge where we found out that Tsitsipas is the romantic one who initiated the 1st kiss and said “I love you” before she did. Speaking as someone who had that backfire on him the last time, that’s a bold move, my Greek friend.

A Setback at Wimbledon (July 2023)

Tsitsidosa was hoping to play together in mixed doubles competition at Wimbledon last July, but a spinal injury for Badosa ended that dream.

The couple is very supportive of each other’s playing career and feels that they have similar goals and can motivate each other to reach them. Tsitsipas touched on this topic at a press conference at the 2023 National Bank Open in Toronto:

“My biggest dream of all is for us to do it together. To be World No. 1 one day together,” Tsitsipas added. “I think I can truly say that I have fulfilled my biggest, deepest desire in tennis to not just have done it myself but to have done it with a person that will be there for me for the rest of my life.”

With Tsitsipas being the romantic one and talking about the rest of his life with Badosa, what happened next came as a real surprise.

The Breakup (May 5, 2024)

On May 5, 2024, Badosa took to her Instagram page to share the news that the tennis couple had split:

“After careful consideration and many cherished moments together, Stefanos and I have decided to amicably part ways,” Badosa wrote in the since-expired Instagram story. “We have shared a journey filled with love and learning, and it is as friends with immense mutual respect that we now choose to move forward on our own paths.”

She added, “We are grateful for the support of our friends, family, and all who have been part of our story. As we transition into this new chapter of our lives, we continue to wish each other nothing but the best in all our endeavours.”

The joint Instagram account, Tsitsidosa, was also no more as the news of this breakup came just shy of 1 year into the relationship.

Badosa later said to tennis.com that Tsitsipas may have been the right person at the wrong time. Ouch.

The Quick Reunion (3 Weeks Later)

Rumors were swirling of a reunion after photographers caught the couple holding hands in Monte Carlo and eating dinner in Paris.

About 3 weeks after the publicized breakup, Tsitsipas confirmed to Greek media that the couple was a couple again. Surprisingly, he revealed that he was the one who ended it before reflecting and realizing he had something special with Badosa.

Tsitsipas told tennis.com that “She is my person” before going into detail about Badosa:

“Paula didn’t do anything wrong, nor did I do anything wrong,” Tsitsipas said. “It was hard for us being apart and I was going through some hard times too. I would say that I didn’t manage it very well either, because I was feeling the pressure of the tour, of my work. It seemed like a mountain to combine these two, and I made the decision to take a break.

“After two, three weeks I realized that she is a person who has supported me a lot and when she tried to talk to me about meeting I felt how intense the love we have for each other is. I realized that this relationship I have with Paula is completely different from any other relationship I have had in the past.”

“I feel that she is my person and we understand each other; that puts more value in everything I do and I want her by my side as often as possible. So yes, we’ve reconnected and we’re in a good moment.”

All is well that ends well.

The On-Court Chemistry Must Wait (June 2024)

Fans were excited to see the couple finally make their official mixed doubles debut at Roland Garros in the French Open in June. But weather delays for rain pushed their match back to Monday, meaning Tsitsipas would have had to play 2 doubles matches on Monday, a day before an important singles match.

After consulting with Badosa, they agreed it would be fine if they withdrew from the mixed doubles if it would help Tsitsipas in singles competition. He ultimately blamed the weather for pushing things back.

We’ll see if they ever get to show their chemistry on the court together in mixed doubles. As for the relationship off the court, let’s root for a happy ending for a change. They seem like a great fit for each other.
