The Umbrella Academy

Five months before The Boys stole some of its thunder, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy was the latest comic book adaptation about a family of superheroes to succeed on a streaming platform in 2019.

After surviving a pandemic and a writer’s strike, The Umbrella Academy is finally coming back after a 2-year hiatus for its 4th and final season.

Here is what you need to know before you can watch The Umbrella Academy Season 4, and look out at the top betting sites, as they often post props on popular shows.

What Is The Umbrella Academy?

The Umbrella Academy was an American comic book series created by Gerard Way (yes, the lead singer of My Chemical Romance) and illustrated by Gabriel Ba. Published by Dark Horse Comics, The Umbrella Academy has released a total of 32 issues in the periods of 2007-09 and 2018-19. There is still a plan for Volume 4 of the main storyline.

Originally optioned for a film, it was reworked into a TV series and given the green light by Netflix in 2017. Season 1 finally aired in February 2019 on the streamer.

How It All Began

In Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy, 43 women around the world give birth at the same time on October 1, 1989 despite not knowing they were previously pregnant. Billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (played by Colm Feore) adopts 7 of the children and gives them numerical names, but their robot mother, Grace, also gives them human names.

The siblings learn how to fight crime together, but one day, Reginald dies, and a global apocalypse is imminent. The siblings must band together to prevent it using their variety of powers, which include super strength, mind control, communication with the dead, and the ability to travel through space and time.

The 2nd season sees the group split apart and having to battle a new threat of the apocalypse. In Season 3, they return to present day (2019) only to find a different timeline where Reginald has adopted a new superhero group called The Sparrow Academy. They must prevent a grandfather paradox that was caused by their time travel.

Fans of series like The Boys and Doom Patrol would feel right at home with what The Umbrella Academy has to offer. It’s a similar mixture of dark comedy, sci-fi, and superhero comic book storytelling.

You can stream all 30 episodes for Seasons 1-3 on Netflix right now.

Do Critics Like The Umbrella Academy?

Yes, The Umbrella Academy has been praised by critics for each of its 3 seasons. It has also been lauded by critics – less by fans – for effectively writing actor Elliot Page’s real-life transition to a trans man in the Season 3 script for the character Viktor.

  • Season 1: 77% (94 reviews)
  • Season 2: 91% (89 reviews)
  • Season 3: 91% (57 reviews)

The Umbrella Academy is one of the few Netflix series that has maintained or improved its rating by season. It has also been nominated for 6 Primetime Emmy Awards in a variety of categories.

When Does The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Begin?

The 4th and final season of The Umbrella Academy will debut on Netflix on August 8, 2024. It has 6 episodes, making it the shortest season yet, and all episodes will be available at the same time as is the Netflix standard.

What Do We Know About The Umbrella Academy Season 4?

*Warning: Some spoilers for Season 3 included.

Not a whole lot is known about the specifics of the final season.

It was announced in 2023 that actors Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally are joining the cast along with comedic actor David Cross. A picture of Offerman in costume was leaked before the writer’s strike in 2023 as he appears to be playing some gun-toting, small-town mayor with Mullally playing his wife, a role she shares in real life as Mrs. Ron Swanson. These should be good additions to the cast.

Plot details have been very thin for the final season of The Umbrella Academy, and since Volume 4 of the comic book has yet to be released, fans can only speculate how the story ends for the siblings. But all of your favorite characters should return from past seasons after the timeline was reset once again.

A trailer was released in late May for the final season, showing them embarking on a rescue mission to presumably find Sloane, a member of the Sparrow Academy who became a new love interest for Luther in Season 3. She was missing at the end of Season 3.

There is a lot of plot to wrap up in the final 6 episodes, though maybe they’ll be longer in length like the 4th season of Stranger Things was on Netflix.

When we last saw the siblings, Allison killed Reginald to reset the world, which led them to a new timeline where the siblings were without their powers. Luther was no longer an ape man, Five got his arm back (but can’t jump through time), and the ultimate fate of Allison is another question mark. There also appears to be another Ben despite seeing him die (again) in Season 3.

With Reginald back and a huge part of the story, you have to figure a final confrontation between him and the siblings will take place before the series comes to a close.

The final episode of the series is entitled “End of the Beginning”, and you should expect a definitive ending to this whacky series.
