Dragon’s Dogma 2 vs. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: How Did They Approach Their Open World Designs

Modern open-world games are not as simple as they once were. They are filled with interconnected storylines, optional missions, items to collect, valuable rewards, challenging boss battles, timed challenges, vehicles and numerous other features that would have been technologically unfeasible decades ago.

Because of this, the open-world genre is fascinating because of the wide range of variations among its games. Dragon’s Dogma 2 exemplifies this well, but Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will always be a comparison staple.

Unlike many games in the last decade that have followed a similar open-world format, Dragon’s Dogma 2, like its predecessor from 2012, is unafraid to defy conventions and distinguish itself from the rest.

One of the ways it does this is through its unique ‘pawn system ‘. This system allows players to recruit and customize AI companions, known as ‘pawns, ‘who can assist in battles, provide useful information and even learn from the player’s actions. Although the unconventional nature of Dragon’s Dogma 2 may first deter novice players, it is a distinctive game characteristic. This aspect prompts an intriguing comparison between Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the newly launched Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Before heading to the eSports betting sites to see which of these will get the Game of the Year Award, let’s dive a little further into the games’ similarities and contrasts.

The Open World in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 embraces a very player-focused open-world experience. The player has significant autonomy in determining their next course of action, with little instruction from the game.

Dragon’s Dogma 2’s open world, much like Elden Ring, is a realm of unexpected encounters and hidden treasures. It’s a place where the player’s journey is not dictated by a map but by the whims of the world. New towns and dungeons are discovered through chance encounters, often initiated by NPCs. This unique approach to open-world exploration sets Dragon’s Dogma 2 apart, sparking curiosity and excitement for its gameplay.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has random enemy patrols in its open environment. However, these encounters do not often provide the same gaming experience as Dragon’s Dogma 2.

During battles against a gang of goblins in Dragon’s Dogma 2, it is not uncommon for additional creatures, such as wolves, to join the fight. These unexpected allies or enemies can significantly change the dynamics of the battle, adding a layer of unpredictability and excitement to the gameplay. Occasionally, even larger monsters like cyclops or griffins can unexpectedly appear and participate in the encounter, creating highly distinctive and unforgettable moments.

The Open World in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth provides a comprehensive open-world experience for the second act of the original 1997 game. This includes a vast map with diverse environments, a multitude of side quests and activities and a rich narrative that unfolds as the player explores.

Inspired by Ubisoft’s well-known open-world approach, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth offers a unique blend of exploration, combat and storytelling.

Ubisoft’s open-world formula, first introduced in 2007’s Assassin’s Creed but gained popularity with 2012’s Far Cry 3, involves players traversing a large map and completing a comprehensive list of tasks. These tasks include side missions, collecting items, conquering enemy camps and various smaller tasks that may appear unimportant.

Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth does not require the player to free enemy camps or gather resources, its open-world incorporates some familiar themes from alternative Ubisoft games. For example, the player can reveal the map by activating a series of towers scattered across the realm. These towers, when activated, not only reveal the map but also unlock new areas, quests and items, encouraging exploration and discovery.

Fortunately, the side missions in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth tend to provide more satisfying narrative rewards than the majority of Ubisoft games. These missions are not just simple fetch quests or kill tasks but often involve complex storylines, unique characters and challenging gameplay.

Additionally, the game’s secret boss battles and monster encounters are among its most impressive features, offering a high level of challenge and rewarding the player with unique items and abilities.
