Paper Mario

Mario fanatics were ecstatic about the Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door remake in September 2023, and now its official release date is less than a month away!

Like every Mario game in existence, Paper Mario has a widespread community of lovers. This particular franchise first reached our consoles with the eponymous game in 2000 on the N64. However, Paper Mario’s popularity didn’t truly flourish until The Thousand-Year Door dropped in 2004, a game that is often hailed as one of the best in the series. Its engaging story, unique gameplay mechanics and charming characters captivated many Mario diehards, leading them to buy a GameCube strictly to play the new title.

Unfortunately, Paper Mario’s next release, Sticker Star on the 3DS, felt like a step backward, and the fan base became disgruntled. The game’s departure from the traditional RPG elements and the focus on sticker-based gameplay was not well-received. Again, 2020’s release of The Origami King received a significant backlash due to the lack of RPG features, further fueling the fans’ desire for a return to the series’ roots.

The recent failures in Paper Mario titles have notably assisted the frenzy around the Thousand-Year Door remake because the original was so beloved. And with that said, let’s look at everything we know about the game so far before making our release bets at eSports betting sites.

The Thousand-Year Door Trailer

Fuelling the excitement and anticipation, Nintendo Direct dropped a trailer for the Mario remake last year. The footage highlighted the significantly upgraded graphics and included Yoshi Kid, Goombella and, of course, the main character, Mario himself.

Last month, Nintendo was back with another trailer, this time to give players an intimate preview of the game’s story.

How Does the Paper Mario Remake Gameplay Look?

With an identical storyline and similar gameplay to the original GameCube classic, players can rest assured that the essence of the game they loved is preserved. They should expect minimal disappointment and some surprises regarding graphical upgrades such as framerate and aesthetics.

For those unfamiliar, The Thousand-Year Door features a turn-based battle system as you take Mario and your chosen partner on a quest to rescue Princess Peach.

What Is the Release Date of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door?

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will be released on May 23rd, 2024, and it will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.

Does The Thousand-Year Door Remake Have Any New Content?

The video Nintendo has shared with gamers so far shows a significant improvement in lighting, texturing and quality. Naturally, given that it is a remaster of a GameCube title, it is to be anticipated. The team’s work on the models that make the game resemble moving paper makes this most apparent. As an example, if you look closely at the trees in outside images, you’ll see that they resemble three-dimensional paper items rather than the flat trees in the original.

To be sure, all of it is thrilling, but it’s par for the course for a remake of this scale. Fans truly want to know if there will be any new material.

Someone noticed a different Toad design in a trailer for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door a few months ago. Toad, a newly introduced NPC, wears purple clothing and sports a mushroom cap. The fanbase is divided about whether this is just a side feature or whether Nintendo plans to include this new Toad in future material. Some speculate that this Toad could be a new playable character, while others believe it could be a hint at a new quest or game mode. What are your thoughts?

Toad

This Toad NPC may be Nintendo’s attempt to add amiibo functionality or a new quest that encourages experienced gamers to get into the remake even more. Whatever the case may be, Nintendo is not likely to provide all the details to fans in advance. On the contrary, developers will likely keep this a secret until the end, adding to the excitement and anticipation.

Of course, we can do nothing but speculate for now, as Nintendo hasn’t revealed much so far. However, it would be surprising if they didn’t add new content for fans to dive into. The fan base’s desire for new material is understandable, and we hope that Nintendo has taken this into consideration when developing the remake.
