Poker Prodigy Series Phil Galfond
The next part in our Poker Player Prodigy Series is Phil Galfond, one of the modern-day larger-than-life poker personalities who has gained his reputation among the highest stakes cash games players of the modern online era.

How Did It All Begin?

Phil Galfond started out his poker journey playing $10 sit & go games with a $50 bankroll and, unsurprisingly, burnt through it too fast. Then amazingly, after depositing $100, he managed to run that up into playing $2,000 sit & go games with a $100,000 bankroll.

What Is Sit & Go Poker?

Sit & Go poker is a single table tournament with between 2 and 10 players competing. It will be played until there is a winner. At Joe Wager’s online poker sites, you will find a wide range of sit & go poker tables. The recommended poker sites have been rigorously tested by our experts for standard of software and trustworthiness.

Galfond Moves Bankroll Over to Cash Games

When his bankroll reached the landmark $100,000, Galfond moved over to cash games, starting at $5/10 No Limit. After a lengthy period of success, he skipped the next level and went straight up to $25/50. As he says in his TikTok video below, “the rest is history”, as he went on to take part in the biggest online cash games.
@phil.galfond I started my career as a #poker pro playing these stakes over 17 years ago. In that time, I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to move from the low stakes online to the highest stakes you can play. Do you have a poker related question, strategy or otherwise? Is Phil Galfond a Risk Taker?

With his prominent presence on social media, and in particular X (formerly Twitter), Galfond has charted his progress through the highs and lows of a poker player, admitting at times that he took shots at the higher levels and paid the price. We always recommend strong bankroll management as being a key ingredient to a solid online poker journey. Take time to read Galfond’s X Twitter account, because it explains the fundamental principles and he admits to his mistakes while looking to always learn and progress further. What he does admit is that he, “was never tempted to chase my losses, which would be a recipe for going broke.” Indeed, we can confirm that a strong discipline in bankroll management is to never chase losses.

Online Training Site

After his prodigious success online, Phil Galfond decided to open an online poker training site called Run it Once Poker, where he himself, and over 100 poker players, produced elite content for all levels of poker player.

Phil Galfond Live Poker Resume

Don’t be fooled by Phil Galfond’s online brilliance. Over the years, he has managed to transcend into a very accomplished live poker player. To illustrate this, the North Potomac man has won three WSOP Bracelets. The first was back in 2008 in the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha with rebuys for $817,781. He had to wait a further seven years for his second, the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 single draw. His third WSOP Bracelet came once again in the $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha Hi-lo eight or better.

Cash Game Challenges in Pot Limit Omaha

Back in November of 2019, Phil Galfond offered a challenge to the poker-playing community for online heads-up action at high stakes in Pot Limit Omaha. Over the course of the coming months, he embarked on a journey against many of the game’s top exponents in a profitable fashion to enhance his reputation further. Galfond has a very distinctive style online with an analytical approach based on math. He was one of the first players to utilize hand ranges when appraising opponents’ hands. The style is not 100% exact but allows for optimum gameplay and a very +EV (Expected Value) approach.

Phil Galfond Takes a Step Back From the Cutting Edge

In recent years, Phil Galfond has taken a step back from the cutting edge of poker admitting that “My approach changed with my circumstances I don’t view bankroll management the way I used to. I’m not driven by the same goals. I’m no longer a college kid. I’m 38. I’m a father.” We can see that Phil Galford’s prodigious journey through the golfing levels from online phenom to multiple WSOP Bracelet winner has slowed down in recent times. That is to be expected given the added responsibility fatherhood brings and he seems blissfully happy with his wife Farah Fath, one of America’s best-known soap actresses. Their son Spencer was born in 2018 and the two of them share a love for poker after Fath’s television forays into poker on Poker After Dark.
